Can I get Finance on a Motorhome?
Yes, you can! The process of getting a new or used motorhome in finance is different to regular car or van finance, but if you’ve financed a vehicle before, you’ll find it a simple one.
Provided you do plenty of research, and are responsible with your money, a finance agreement is an accessible way to purchase your dream motorhome.
Getting vehicle finance does also depend on your credit file.
What is the best way to Finance a Motorhome?
There are several ways to get a finance agreement for a motorhome:
- Hire Purchase (HP)
- Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
- Credit Agreement/Loan
Whatever method is best for you, it’s important that you check your credit score before applying for a finance agreement. You have more chance of getting approved if you have a medium to high credit score. If you have poor credit, you could still get finance but the rate you receive may be higher and that can impact your monthly repayments.
You should also keep in mind that applying for multiple finance agreements in a short period of time will also affect your credit score, so keeping your search and applications focused is ideal.
Once you know what vehicle you’d like to get on finance, use the Match Me Finance Calculator to find lenders and thousands of vehicles that will be perfect for you. The best part? Using our finance calculator will NEVER affect your credit score!
Using our car search you can filter by make, model, mileage and more to narrow down your options. You can even sort by lowest monthly repayment.
How much Deposit do you need for a Motorhome?
The average deposit is around 10-20% of the overall value of the motorhome. Remember that you will need to pay this initial cost before you start your monthly payments, so keep some extra money aside for the first payment.
Lower deposits will result in higher monthly payments. If you would rather pay less per month, but have enough money to pay a large deposit, many lenders will allow you to increase the deposit amount. This is ideal if you have enough money to buy a motorhome already but are looking for a more affordable way to pay.
How long can you finance a motorhome for?
Motorhomes are commonly financed for around 5 years or more. However agreements can be for as little as 2 years, depending on your preferences and budget. Longer terms are possible but this depends on the lender and your approval.
Should I buy a New or Used Motorhome?
There are advantages and disadvantages of financing a used motorhome. Looking into the second-hand market will result in cheaper vehicles, but they may need servicing more often and the condition will vary. Match Me only work with trusted dealerships, and conduct checks on all vehicles to help ensure they are reliable and in good condition.
Financing a new vehicle can be risky as, due to depreciation, the value of the motorhome may change during your agreement. However, unlike cars and vans, motorhomes depreciate less, meaning a new vehicle will often retain its value.
Long journeys will lead to increased servicing and maintenance. Bear this in mind when considering your monthly payments. It would be sensible to keep some money back for ongoing servicing and repairs.
Can you Live in a Motorhome?
Even if it is financed, you can legally live in a motorhome in the UK. However, you must abide by specific laws and regulations.
Firstly, you can’t park a motorhome in any location. Caravans and motorhomes can only be parked in locations approved of by the local council of the area. Parking anywhere else can result in fines or further legal action. If you park in a caravan park or campsite, and pay the owners if required, you are free to set up. For more information, the Highway Code has a section on motorhome usage.
