Looking after your car during the coronavirus crisis

Obviously during the coronavirus crisis, we are all going out a lot less. This has had a noticeable impact on all aspects of the car industry, from sales of vehicles, how they are sold, MOT regulations and of course the price of the fuel we put in them.

Another aspect much closer to home is caring for your car itself.

It is easy to forget to do basic checks on your vehicle when it’s not in constant use, but it’s just as important – in fact more so – to look after your car when it is being used less than usual.

On the subject of MOTs, the Department for Transport announced in March that there would be a 6 month extension for MOT’s due on or after the 30th March 2020.Whilst garages remain open with restrictions, there’s many checks you can carry out yourself to keep your vehicle maintained in the meantime, but make sure you double-check that due date!

Keeping your car clean is just as important when it’s not in use, ensure bodywork is kept free from dirt and more importantly birds’ mess which can be surprisingly damaging – and doubtless more of a hazard the less your car is mobile!

Check that registration plates remain clearly visible, tyres are fully inflated and all fluid levels are checked and topped up.

Check lights are working correctly and battery is in good health, check all dashboard lights for any issues that may crop up.

Obviously within the restrictions, try to get your car mobile – even if it is just used for your regulation weekly shopping trip.
