What Size Car do I Need?

Cars come in all shapes and sizes. Spend two minutes near a busy road and you’ll see everything from tiny city cars, to executive saloons, to huge SUVs and all that come between.

Knowing what car is right for you isn’t easy when there are so many factors to consider, and size is one of them. Things that affect the size of car you need include:

  • Where you live
  • Where you work
  • What size family you have
  • How often you travel
  • Where you spend your free time
  • What you feel comfortable driving

When you use your car

So, with so much to think about, it’s easier if we break it down until you know which type of car is perfect for you and your family. Once you’ve chosen one, use the Match Me Finance Calculator to find trusted lenders and thousands of vehicles that will be perfect for you. It also NEVER affects your credit score, so you can find perfect cars and lenders in just a few clicks without harming your credit.

Financing a Small Car

The term ‘small’ covers, ironically, a large selection of cars. Small SUVs, also known as crossovers, are only small in comparison to their larger counterparts.

But when most people think of small cars, they imagine hatchbacks with two doors, and not much legroom or boot space.

If you need a car to commute, a small car is great for city driving and parking. They are economical too, meaning you save on petrol over time and have to fill up less often. When you’re stuck in traffic jams a lot, this saving adds up fast.

Even if you don’t work in the city, and even have your own space to park when you arrive, small cars are easy to drive, with small, zippy engines that make them good fun when you have the road to yourself.

However, size is the city car’s biggest weakness. Or is it? It depends how much space you need.

They have boots that can fit a weekly shop in and plenty of legroom in the front two seats. If they have back seats, they can fold down to double or even triple the boot space. Legroom might not be enough for long legs, but they’re perfect for kids.

In short, if you have a small family, and don’t need a great deal of space, a small city car would be ideal for you.

Financing a Saloon

Saloons are the best of both worlds in a lot of ways. They are very comfortable, spacious, and great fun to drive, with large engines that aren’t too thirsty and are quiet at low speeds.

They’re the first choice for commuters who like to travel in style. Long wheelbase models can be tricky to park, but most won’t struggle in a parking garage or quiet side road. They also have all the tech and creature comforts you could ever need, making both long and short journeys a breeze.

But what about space? Well, most saloons are designed around adults, providing plenty of space in the back. High end models that focus more on comfort than speed are designed around having a driver, meaning the back seats are even more comfortable than the front.

Further back you’ll find large boots that can fit luggage or shopping, depending on what you need it for that moment. You can holiday easily with a large saloon as you can fit two large suitcases in most large saloons’ boots. If you need a little extra room, why not install a roof rack?

Saloons are naturally spacious but aren’t suited for smaller budgets. Thankfully finance agreements give you access to a much wider pool of cars than you might expect; enter your details into our finance calculator to see what you can get for your money.

Financing an SUV

If you have a large family, it’s hard to justify anything smaller than an SUV. With up to seven seats, you have room for people, pets, and everything else you need.

Planning a holiday is very stressful, but having an SUV on the drive makes things a lot easier. You’ll have plenty of room for luggage, meaning you don’t have to be a professional Tetris player to fit everything inside.

It also makes journeys to the airport, seaside or anywhere else much more comfortable. With large seats and creature comforts, everyone will be kept in a good mood until your destination is in sight.

If you’re particularly adventurous, an SUV can handle tough terrain too. This makes them perfect for campers, you won’t struggle to fit all your gear inside, or anyone who wants to drive that extra mile for the best experience. You need a car that is dependable, and a good SUV will always get you home.

Financing a Sports Car

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, most sports cars aren’t famous for their practicality. However, there are some that may surprise you, and if you’re willing to sacrifice some space for a thrill behind the wheel, there are plenty to choose from.

There is a type of sports car known as Grand Tourer (GT). These offer all of the power and speed of a supercar but with space inside similar to a saloon. The most popular GTs come from manufacturers like Aston Martin, Bentley, and Porsche. Any of these models allow you to blast down the motorway with a full shop in the boot, for those who are determined to keep the milk cold.

Even smaller sports cars have similar boot space to city cars, so if you want to spice up your daily drives, you’ll find plenty that suit you.

The Perfect Fit

Picking a car that’s the right size is crucial when setting up a finance agreement. There are pros and cons to all cars, and personal preference is important too. Whatever suits you, there is a car ready and waiting for you to get on finance.
